Newtown, fading light and shop reflections

I have been experimenting with going out to shoot photos at dusk, beyond the golden hour and into the night. When I took these shots I changed the white balance settings as the light was changing. These were taken in Newtown, a favourite inner-west-towards-the-city suburb that is still quaint, arty and grungy. May it never fall into compete hipster-dom.

WB on 'sunny' in fading light. Pretty much an accurate representation.

WB on 'fluorescent' brings out the blue.

WB on 'tungsten' does too but worked well with the lights from inside the shop.

WB on 'shade' tends to warm things up.

The cups and saucers is my favourite. Sometimes simple things turn out unexpectedly well.
Thanks for visiting and have a good weekend,
Val.

  1. Yep, I like the cups, too. Seems to me that some shops may be deliberately using lights that are photo-friendly. Coincidence?

    1. Yes, I saw it. I have a lingering memory of winter Norway, red roofs, white snow and fir trees...as exotic to me as Sydney sunshine is to many visitors..

  5. I'm in love with the cups and saucers! This street looks so interesting.

I'm trying to learn more about my camera as well - how do they pack all those settings and options into such a small device!

I also really like the first photo, you captured the lights in the left corner really well.

    1. Thanks Coco - you'd love the street. It's within walking distance of Sydney University and various design schools and has always been a student hangout. Many clothing designers and other genuine artistic types have had their start there. It's a a great place to find unusual second hand clothes, bric -a-brack, strange little restaurants, pubs full of student and arty types..and a small bunch of zealous amateur photographers who meet once a month ;)
